AND THE BEAT GOES ON: COLLAGING THE CONNECTIONS
AMONG VINYL RECORDS AND VINYL DJs
a thesis by brenda ceja
In a world where millions of songs are instantly available at the touch of one’s fingertips, there remains a question as to why so many people across generations return, or turn to, vinyl records. This series of forty five collages on “45s” situates records as powerful cultural objects which elicit emotions, memories, stories, and rituals. Focusing through the lens of vinyl DJs, these hand-pasted collages reaffirm vinyl records as the physical backdrop for different cultural movements across time from Soul, Disco, Dancehall, Hip-Hop, House, Techno, and more. This exhibition is a study and celebration of the continued survival of vinyl, and the music inscribed in its grooves.
